This
480-page hard-bound volume is intended for a wide
readership, comprising office- and hospital-based mature
and trainee clinicians, nurse practitioners, and
operating department assistants, as well as various
trade organisations engaged in all aspects of laser
technology. Mindful of this varied readership, the
editors have compiled each topic as a ‘stand-alone’
chapter. This has been achieved at the cost of some
repetition, but this has been kept to a minimum.
The
book is written in textbook style, with the subject
being approached systematically in order to cover basic
laser science and its clinical application. The section
on basic science includes laser biophysics, equipment
and instrumentation, theatre protocol and safety
regulations. The chapter on anaesthesia describes the
various techniques and emphasises the ‘team’ concept
essential to a safe laser environment in surgery of the
airways.
The
clinical laser applications follow the natural
anatomical watershed of surgery of the larynx, nose,
ears, and lower airways. The authors pay detailed
attention to published works on these topics, describe
the indications, assess the performance and parameters
of various lasers for a particular procedure, and cover
the all-important issue of benefit and risk to the
patient. The various steps in the operative procedures
are extensively illustrated by high-quality colour
photographs. The bibliography provides suggestions for
further in-depth reading. The clinical chapters are
followed by some practical advice on setting up a laser
service de novo. The Glossary makes useful reading in
itself, since it is written in an application-oriented
style, rather than in one of pure physics.
Another
unique feature of this volume is the accompanying CD-ROM,
which provides further insight into laser procedures
with the help of still images, 134 minutes of video
clips, and pertinent texts.
This
work represents the systematic accumulation of
contributions from some thirty-seven well-known and
respected specialists, drawn globally for their
expertise on and interest in the subject.
